Nepal has defeated Maldives after 17 years at the Bangabandhu Gold Cup played at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka on Tuesday, January 20, 2016.
With the 4-1 victory, Nepal has broken the 17 years domination over Maldives since the Eighth South Asian Games in 1999 in Kathmandu along with securing the final berth against Bahrain U-23. The final match is scheduled for January 22, 2016.
Nawayug Shrestha made a hat-trick while Bishal Rai scored a goal to beat Maldives at the Cup. Shrestha scored an opening goal in the 31st minute and he doubled the tally in the 61st minute. Similarly, Rai scored the third goal in the 52nd minute to lead the match by 3 against nil until 76th minute.
Shrestha’s scored in the 90+2 minutes also proved to be a hat-trick for him at the tournament. Ahmed Nashid had scored a consolation for Maldives in the 76th minute.
