The majority of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) members held its 4th Annual General Assembly despite National Sports Council (NSC) direction to hold it in Kathmandu on Monday, December 14, 2015.
The AGM also unanimously elected Chatur Bahadur Chand as the new chairman of CAN at the presence of its 71 members out of 81. President Tanka Angbuhang was not present in the assembly.
The meeting started four hours late due to arguments between the two factions of the association. Police have to intervene after situation turned uncontrolled.
Though Minister for Youth and Sports Satya Narayan Mandal was scheduled to inaugurate the programme at 11 am, the programme commenced at 3 pm as Minister failed to attend the function. Minister Mandal had flown to Lukla with NSC member-secretary Keshab Kumar Bista.
After Minister Mandal did not show up, CAN invited Nepali Congress lawmaker Dhanraj Gurung for the inaugural ceremony.
Similarly, the AGM also elected Binod Mainali as first vice-chairman, Shailesh Chaudhary and Diwakar Ghale as vice-chairman and Ashoke Nath Pyakurel as general secretary.
On the other hand, NSC is set to dissolve CAN and formed a new cricket governing board. It is learnt that the new board will have UML leader Yogesh Bhattarai, Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa among others.
